Kurzfassung englisch:
The transport of small freight (general cargo, baggage and packages) is definitely increasing at the moment. This is
supported by online commerce. Current delivery services are inflexible concerning customers´ needs and demands. For example the
person´s physical presence is necessary at the delivery address to accept it or the person has to pick up the package in a shop.
Moreover, delivery services were often uneconomic because they needed several delivery attempts. This was the reason for the
exploratory project smartBOX. The intention of smartBOX (founded by the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and
Technology and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency) was to combine increasing mobility requirements and tightening
resources by creating an intelligent and holistic approach. Visionary mechanisms of autonomous traffic optimisation together with
cross-sectoral transport and service models as well as the development of terminals and intelligent containers and transport,
information and communication technologies could help managing the challenges of small freight mobility in urban areas, increasing
quality of life and saving the environment. In order to minimise the development risks it was first necessary to survey and define all
requirements. Therefore, extensive customer surveys were conducted.
