Kurzfassung englisch:
LD-Slag is a very convenient construction material which is used in road construction, because of well defined and steady material properties. Often, LD-Slag is stored in giant slag-dumps before it is used for construction. That is why we are conducting a field-aging experiment to evaluate the change in material properties, chemical composition and environmental impact caused by this storage time.
We constructed a small artificial slag dump right on the voestalpine premises. This dump is equipped with a weather station to measure humidity, temperature and precipitation. The dump is separated into four parts, so that we can remove one part without influencing the rest of the dump. In intervals of six month, one part of the dump gets removed and analyzed. There are three components that are being analyzed: the slag itself, the water that did interact with the slag, and solid residue in the water. These components are analyzed via a multitude of techniques: Ion chromatography, Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, Gas chromatography, High-performance liquid chromatography, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The field experiment is conducted for two years and the results are used to develop an artificial aging protocol, where slag gets aged by increased temperature and oxidative atmospheres. These aged slag samples are then used to produce asphalt mix test samples for performance based tests (resistance to low temperature cracking, to permanent deformation and to fatigue, as well as polishing resistance and friction). After evaluating these parameters for different stage-in-life slag samples, the whole test piece is being aged, via Gaseous Phase Aging, and analyzed to simulate an aging road pavement constructed with already stored slag.
By conducting all of these experiments, we will be able to determine, at which stage-of-life, slag is best suited for road construction and if and when it loses its usefulness for road construction.
