Im Rahmen des Projektes wurde das Wissen über Gebäudebestände mit dem Ziel vertieft und objektiviert,
um integrale, langfristige und lebenszyklusorientierte Modernisierungsszenarien zu entwickeln.
Die internationalen Partner verwendeten ähnliche Methodiken und Planungsinstrumente um
die jeweils länderspezifischen Bestände zu untersuchen. In Österreich wurde die Architektur des Roten
Wien ‐ die Gemeindebauten und Siedlungen ‐ erbaut zwischen 1918 und 1934, untersucht.

The goal of this research project is to objectify and deepen the knowledge base on the building
stocks and further to develop applicable tools and strategic measures for their sustainable modernisation
based on the notion of preserving of resources. Project partners will use common objectives
and planning tools and will follow a common procedure in order to develop a specific national application
which results from a historical, technical, social and cultural understanding of the specific national
stock fragments.
The particular building stock chosen for research in Austria will be the social housing of the modern
era build between 1918 and 1934, the architecture of "Red Vienna"; residential apartment blocks
(Gemeindebau) and settlements (Siedlungen). Three characteristics: sufficient use of floor space
within the housing unit, added common facilities and the principle of future additional space are essential
for socio‐cultural capital of these particular building types and are in themselves sustainable.
